The Task Force has commissioned a first of its kind study of LGBT seniors by renowned researcher Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen of the University of Washington.  She will be presenting her initial data findings, answering questions and discussing plans for the second phase of the Task Force study ? an online community questionnaire that will be distributed widely throughout the community in 2013.

An important Task Force goal is to ensure our work, including the study, reflects broad participation of the entire LGBT community including lesbians, bisexuals, seniors of color and the transgender community.  Everyone is welcome to join us on January 8th and for all future Task Force meetings (held the second Tuesday of every month at 4:00 PM).

When:        January 8, 2013, at 4:00 PM

Where:      101 Grove Street (Department of Public Health Commission Room 300)

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO AGING POLICY TASK FORCE

On May 24, 2012, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed unprecedented legislation establishing, what is one of the first LGBT Senior Task Forces in the nation.  Fifteen members of the community, representing a diverse swath of the LGBT movement were subsequently sworn in to officially represent the City?s fact finding interests aimed at exploring issues, challenges and barriers, as well as community assets which would ensure the appropriate aging in place environment within the City and County of San Francisco.  As an integral part of its charge, the Task Force will be launching community needs assessment meetings, and a formal research project to ascertain the needs of the LGBT senior populations.  Collecting information and creating recommendations to improve programs and services for LGBT seniors is a vital component of the Task Force?s mission.

This in turn will assist vulnerable members of the LGBT senior community in more effectively aging in place within San Francisco and thus, experiencing a higher quality of life as honored elders in the LGBT movement and community.  We are charged with moving forward our recommendations to the Board of Supervisors by the end of 2013.  You can learn more about the Task Force at: http://sf-hrc.org/index.aspx?page=201 .
