Controversial infill project marries art with architecture in Old Ottawa South

C

Surface Developments, an Ottawa real esate development company, has commissioned a concrete mural which will form a part of it’s development facing Brighton Beach Park on Brighton Ave and invites the community to come and watch it?s installation and meet the artist.  The artwork is intended to animate and enliven the elevation of the building that directly fronts the public park adjacent to the Rideau River.

The award wining artist has developed a novel technique using concrete stucco which is applied to the building by skilled craftsmen.  Once in place and still wet the artist carves patterns into the cement to create a form of concrete painting.  He must work quickly as the concrete begins to set almost immediately.  It?s a flurry of activity high up on a scaffold that results in art being created right before your eyes.

The builder has also commissioned 8 painted canvases by the artist which will be photographed and enamel printed on to glass panels to be mounted into the project?s balconies thereby forming an outdoor gallery on Brighton Ave.  It?s been an exciting collaboration for Jakub Ulak, both the president of the company as well as the designer of the building.  ?Christopher?s work is really going to transform the building and I can?t wait to see the results – even today I don?t know what he has planned for the mural?, says Ulak.

Both the builder and the public will get to find out this weekend.  The company is clearly excited about the opportunity to make a contribution to the neighborhood, ?we wanted to engage the community and animate the building and I?m pleased that we were able to accomplish both while also supporting local arts?.
