Great American Bargain Book Show Announces Boston Training for Bargain Book Buyers and Sellers

The Great American Bargain Book Show has announced training sessions to be held in Boston on Aug. 19-20 for vendors who wholesale bargain books and the retailers who buy them.

Boston, MA, August 18, 2010 — One of the largest bargain book shows in the U.S., has announced two training tracks for buyers and sellers of bargain books.

The training will be presented at the Great American Bargain Book Show (GABBS) slated for the Hynes Convention Center in Boston on Aug. 19-20.

Track One training is for owners and buyers of independent bookstores. The independent bookstore organizations involved in hosting the sessions are the New England Independent Booksellers Association (NEIBA, Steve Fischer, executive director), the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association (NAIBA, Eileen Dengler, executive director) and the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA, Wanda Jewell, executive director).

The Track One session on Aug. 19 is titled “Remainder Buying – Plain, Simple and Profitable.” Industry insiders will discuss how booksellers can sell more books and earn more money by adding remainders to their inventory. Retailers can generally buy remainders for much less than conventional books and sell them at higher markups.

The Aug. 19 session is being moderated by Larry May, co-owner of the Great American Bargain Book Show and a national authority on bargain books. Panelists will include:

Susan Little, owner of Jabberwocky Bookshop at the Tannery, located in Newburyport, Mass. Ms. Little opened Jabberwocky (originally the Little Bookshop) 37 years ago. Today, it’s the largest independent bookstore on the Massachusetts Northshore.
Sean Concannon of Parson Weems Publishers, White Plains, N.Y. Concannon joined Parson Weems in 1996. Prior to that, he was the general manager at Tower Books headquarters in Philadelphia. In addition to overseeing a staff of 15 at Tower, he opened and renovated Tower stores in Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires and Mexico City.

Alie Hess, the books and remainders buyer for the Brookline Booksmith of Brookline, Mass., which will be 50 years old next year. Alie has been the buyer for 10 years. Before that, she worked at Waterstone’s.

The Track One training session on Aug. 20 is titled “EESY CHIT – Easy, Effective Strategies You Can Happily Implement Today.” The session is being presented by Karin Wilson, owner of the Page & Palette, an independent bookstore with a long and successful history of serving book lovers of Fairhope, Ala.

Track Two training is aimed at providing a perspective on the revolutionary changes currently affecting the book business The changes are the result of the digital age – the introduction of e-books, e-book readers, e-book apps and print on demand control of inventory.

Serving as panelists for the 9:00 a.m. session on Aug. 19 are Michael Friedman, publishing industry consultant and long-time publishing executive with Barnes & Noble and Friedman/Fairfax Publishing Co.; and Charles Nurnberg, president and publisher at Imagine Publishing. The session will look at how the market for books has evolved, and where both independent and larger publishers are seeing the opportunities for books in the coming years.

The Track Two session at 9:00 a.m. on Aug. 20 will provide a book buyer’s perspective on the industry. Panelists include David Strymish of New England Mobile Book Fair and eCookbooks in Newton, Mass.; and Barbara Seibert of Purple Turtle Productions, a successful independent online bookseller. The buyers will discuss how their world has evolved and changed with new channels opening and product lifecycles moving faster.
