(ROCHESTER, NY) The Civil Rights Front invites lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people, allies, and members of the community to rally in celebration or protest, depending on the outcome of the vote to uphold or revoke marriage equality rights in Maine. The rally will take place at 4PM on November 4 outside of the Federal Building on State Street in downtown Rochester.
With the passage of Proposition 8 in California that denied LGBT people legal recognition of their union and subsequently the many rights attached to marriage under the law, new organizations such as the Civil Rights Front have come to be to address this social inequality in a democratic grassroots effort. Several states have since passed Equal Marriage legislation. The state of Maine will take up a referendum to uphold those rights or revoke them and the battle to protect these civil rights has been an ongoing struggle.
Since the National Equality March, in which hundreds of Rochestarians boarded buses to participate in the 200,000 person strong grassroots march for civil rights, the Civil Rights Front has returned to Rochester in an effort to continue to demand equality at a federal level in all 50 states in matters governed by law. While LGBT couples in Maine still remain second class citizens excluded from the 1,100 federal benefits afforded to straight couples, it is our task to continue to uphold and protect an advance in civil rights. In those victories we find the ability to struggle for full equality.
The rally will begin with a series of speakers from all aspects of life that can speak to the difficulties and struggles of the LGBT community in their everyday life.
