Novel of the Housing Crisis Hits Bestseller List in Humor. Novelist William Hazelgrove wrote Novel of the Recession in Hemingway’s Attic
Chicago, IL, March 09, 2009 — Novelist William Elliott Hazelgrove www.billhazelgrove.com will be appearing on WFLD Fox’s Good Day Chicago program http://www.myfoxchicago.com/subindex/good_day on March 12 2009. The novelist who has seen his book Rocket Man steadily blast higher and higher will be on the morning program to discuss his novel that is based on a couple trying to hold onto their home in the suburbs of Chicago.
The satiric novels depiction of the excesses of the American Dream has brought about comparisons to John Updike, Iriving and Russo in it’s treatment of the suburban landscape. Hazelgrove, who has gone through hard times himself actually wrote the novel three years ago and with errie timing saw what was coming down the pike. “I looked around and saw that no one was really making it and I saw the price people were having to pay,” the author said from his studio in Ernest Hemingway’s attic in Oak Park, IL. “I just saw all this massive materialism and I coudn’t see how anyone could keep it up. So I sat down with this character Dale Hammer who can’t keep up with anything and in one week everything collapses.” Rocket Man has sailed through with rave reviews, Book of the Year Selections, Best Book of 2008, and a lot of top Amazon reviews. It has been the come from behind novel that just happened to about what is going ont today in the housing market.
The interesting part of a novel about the recession is that it is very funny. “I think that is what keeps people reading this book. I mean the subject matter can be grim, but this Dale character is so over the top and gets in so many situations that the humor just busts through,” Hazelgrove continues, laughing. “I have had so many people tell me they can’t remember the last time they laughed outloud at a book. I think in times like these that’s a good thing” Many newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times have hailed the book as a new American Dream. When asked what the new American Dream is, Hazelgrove shrugged slyly, “I guess you’ll have to watch the show”
