2013 Head On Photo Festival International Call for Exhibitions

2

Head On are now seeking International photo artists and venues to apply to be part of the landmark festival.

Born out of a reaction to the limited access and representation of photographic art in Sydney three years ago, Head On Photo Festival, Sydney?s peak photographic organisation, has now firmly set its own style, market and leadership role on the future of photo art in this country.

Head On Photo Festival has a reputation for bringing the big guns of Australian and International photo art to Sydney. In previous years Head On has delivered Magnum and US great David Alan Harvey, acclaimed Indian photographer Pablo Bartholomew and Siberian photographer Valery Klamm to the country. Aussie regulars breaking into the international scene, Stephen Dupont, Tamara Dean and Andrew Quilty, are also favourites.

Next year, the 2013 Head On Photo Festival looks like expanding their model to provide more than photo art to the people of Sydney, explains Head On Director Moshe Rosenzveig,

?Head On has expanded rapidly in its last three years, constantly evolving to audience and artist need along the way. We have listened to our audience and in 2013 we are building a festival that brings together exhibitions, events, education and public debate under one framework?.

Highlights already confirmed for 2013 celebrate the major exhibition of work from a landmark international Photo agency (yet to be publically launched) and an appeal to the public to weigh-in on an age-old debate about the artistic stature of photography.

Along with the big surprises for next year, are the guarantees that the festival will continue to broaden audiences interested in photo art, by showcasing imagery in many locations across Sydney including, commercial galleries, artist run spaces, public parks, train stations, libraries, art schools, universities, restaurants, café?s, pubs, shop fronts and office buildings.

A number of Sydney?s well known museum?s and art venues, such as the State Library of NSW, Museum of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of NSW and the Powerhouse Museum, have participated in the Head On Photo Festival.

Head On Photo Festival has been successful in the last few years uncovering unconventional spaces to exhibit photography and we will keep expanding on this in the future, promises Moshe. Our only concern when choosing work is its quality rather than whether the photo artist is known or not.

Impressively the 2012 Head On Photo Festival activated over 114 venues in Sydney and surrounding suburbs from the Blue Mountains to Bondi and Chatswood to Gymea, through more than 230 exhibitions and events, showcasing the work of over 1190 Australian and International photographers. The festival propelled over 600,000 visits to these exhibitions and events across the month of May 2012.

If the 2013 Head On Photo Festival is anything like this year?s, Sydney is in for a treat. And photo artists, emerging or established, shouldn?t miss out on exhibiting their work during the festival. Head On Photo Festival is now calling for submissions online at www.headon.com.au .

In 2013, Head On are proudly offering three partially subsidised exhibition placements at a prominent Sydney exhibition space for the duration of the festival. The subsidy includes discount on printing, mounting and hanging costs, and free marketing and publicity for each successful applicant.
