New research has revealed that, far from the hedonistic party animals many people mistake 18-24 year olds for, in fact they are too busy fussing about visitors staining their carpets or spilling drinks in their new kitchen to have the time or the inclination to host a party – in contrast to those aged 65 plus, who are far more open about inviting people into their home and are the true party people…
The 18-24 year old generation has been given a new nickname. Turns out that age group is too house proud to party and have been dubbed ‘CHAPS’ – that’s Cautious Hosts Against Party Stress for those of you not in the know.
Flying in the face of stereotypes about younger people throwing open their homes in the UK to wild parties, in fact a quarter of them don’t want to entertain at home for fear of potential party accidents – such as damaged furniture or wine on the carpet. (Tip- try pouring salt onto red wine stains to stop the stain sticking and then clean. White wine also works a treat by neutralising the red colour).
Twenty-six per cent of the house-proud and overly cautious young hosts make guests remove their shoes to safeguard their floors, almost double that of those aged 65+ (14 per cent) who may have been expected to be the most mishap-minded. Just ten per cent of 55-64 year olds worry about damage to their homes.
It appears people don’t trust their friends not to damage their property across the UK, with 14 per cent on average saying they don’t like hosting parties at home as they fear something will get damaged or broken if they do. Almost one in five is so keen to keep their houses spic-and-span they’ll ensure guests remain shoe-less to avoid muddy carpets or high-heels scuffing their wooden floors.
The credit crunch has made people even more cautious as they are now concerned that they wont be able to replace missing or damaged items.
The research also reveals that the Midlands takes the title of Britain’s most house-proud region, with an above-average concern in all areas.
Over a fifth of Midlanders will make their friends take their shoes off when visiting and 16 per cent don’t like hosting house parties for fear of guests getting too much into the party spirit (compared to just 10 per cent of Scots).
James Furse, Managing Director of Greenbee Home Insurance, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership who carried out the research, said, “It’s no surprise that people, regardless of their age, are cautiously house-proud, particularly with financial concerns foremost in the thoughts of a significant proportion of people.
“While those without cover are understandably concerned about the cost of an unfortunate accident while entertaining, even those with home insurance may want to consider checking their policy small print to make sure they’re covered for all eventualities,” he added.
