According to the state labor department’s latest report, New York’s private sector employment increased over the month by 4,200, the first-ever increase in the last five months. However, the overall unemployment rate in the state also increased from 5.2% in May to 5.3% in June, its highest level since December 2004.
“The New York State economy is showing a split personality. Although the total job count increased in the state, the total unemployment rate also increased due to layoffs in the financial sector,†says A. Harrison Barnes, CEO and founder of EmploymentCrossing.
