Undiscovered Cooks Find a Voice and a Home

Silicon Valley, CA – Activecooks.com, a website that allows home cooks to showcase their talents and food culture, is launching today.

Activecooks is a free online community where users can upload videos and photos of their favorite recipes. The website includes blogs, videos from users, recipes, and more. It also allows users to connect with other Home Chefs from around the world.

“I was going through food networks and, at the time, they didn’t have a lot of videos to go with the recipe[s]…and if there were videos, it was done by these highly trained professionals. Of course, it would come out perfect everytime,” says Tommy Huynh, founder.

“So I thought, well, there are a lot of home chefs who can make great meals, too, that aren’t professionals. Let’s give them their 15 minutes of fame for the world to see. Why should Bobby Flay or Emeril get all the glory?”

Huynh approached some business associates about the idea and Activecooks.com was born.

“We want to bring together the different cultures, techniques, and styles and personalities of cooks from all over the world into one community of home chefs,” Huynh said.

He worked with a team of developers to create the website which first launched in September 2007. During the first 4 days of launch, the website exhausted 95% of its bandwidth resources.

“Our entire team was truly shocked, amazed and very happy with the amount of positive response we received from everyone,” says Huynh, about the surge in bandwidth. “We did not anticipate this amount of traffic for at least 3 months after the release, so it was, as we all said, ‘the good-bad news’ scenario.”

The bad news was they needed to purchase more bandwidth. Even after the increase in bandwidth, the website used 5 times its bandwidth resources in the second month!

Activecooks.com currently features 23 videos, 80 photos, and recipes from users all over the world. So far, the website has more than 70 registered users and has received over 1,100 unique visitors since its launch. The site has received over 41,000 views. The site will soon feature text recipes and other features, including a new platform
