Belmont, MA– July 7, 2008- AdmissionsQuest welcomes Buxton School as an AQ Member School. Buxton is a coeducational independent progressive boarding school in Williamstown, MA. The Buxton AQ School Profile is one of the resources available at www.AdmissionsQuest.com.

Founded in 1928 by Ellen Greer Sangster in Short Hills New Jersey, the school moved to its current location- Mrs. Sangster’s family estate- and became a boarding school in 1947. “We (Buxton) believe a student’s whole experience at school is part of his or her education—what goes on outside the classroom is just as important as what goes on inside.”

Buxton strives to build a sense of family and community among everyone. Faculty members live in student dormitories and lunch and dinner are served family style with a faculty member at each table.

Out of the belief that “that personal growth and community well-being are rooted in meaningful and creative work,” Buxton students participate in Work Program. Work Program includes campus forestry, gardening and construction programs as well school maintenance and organization work in the library, dining hall, and dormitories. Students coordinate the year-long timbering lumberjacking, splitting and storage plan to provide the wood that serves as the school’s primary heat source.

To help the community gain perspective and maintain connections beyond the daily focus of rural school life, Buxton School makes a conscious effort to take the entire school beyond its campus and have every community member engage with an urban setting. Every year Buxton takes the entire school into a major North American city “for a week of exploring, learning, experiencing, investigating and understanding.”

The entire school researches the topics that they will cover in the city– homelessness, public transportation, civil liberties, local politics–whatever the city has to offer. Students do all of the planning. They arrange project interviews; schedule all trip logistics and budget.

Buxton offers traditional, rigorous college preparatory academics with opportunities to study some material not often covered in a high school curriculum. Buxton does not offer classes labeled ‘honors’ or “AP.” Faculty members provide special guidance to students choosing to take an Advanced Placement test.

Buxton’s unique and interesting fun facts include:

  • School provides it’s own primary heat source through community logging and lumberjacking.
  • Makes an annual all school to trip to major city that includes community service and performance of the school play.
  • Serves meals dedicated to quality and local seasonal products whenever possible.
