Founded in 1834 as the Worcester County Manual Labor High School, the school became Worcester Academy in 1847 and moved to its present hilltop location in 1869. Worcester has been coeducational since 1974. Worcester serves students in grades 6-12 and post-graduates. Grades 9-PG include 5 and 7-day boarding while the middle school is only a day student program.

Worcester students work through a classical college preparatory curriculum that includes strong visual and performing arts, competitive athletics, and community service components.

Worcester students and faculty take advantage of their urban setting, using the nearby the Worcester Art Museum, the EcoTarium, and other urban resources whenever possible.
