AEMO Releases PLEXOS NEM Dataset

A

AEMO?s functions for the NEM include Power System and Market Operator and National Transmission Planner among other responsibilities.  As part of the transmission planning, the AEMO first released the National Transmission Network Development Plan (NTNDP) in 2010 and have updated the plan in 2011.

For the NTNDP 2012, AEMO has recently released a copy of 2012 NTNDP Database in PLEXOS.  PLEXOS was used to solve the Least-Cost Expansion Modelling requirements of their analysis.

AEMO states that PLEXOS?s ?principal feature is that it solves quickly and enables a large number of scenarios and sensitivity studies to be explored in a short amount of time.? [1]

In addition to the Least-Cost Expansion Modelling, PLEXOS is ideally suited to perform the following related power system analyses in the NEM:

  • Price Forecasting
  • Power Market Simulation and Analysis
  • Trading and Strategic Decision Support
  • Generation and Transmission Capacity Expansion Planning (Investment Analysis)
  • Renewable Integration Analysis
  • Co-optimisation of Ancillary Services and Energy Dispatch
  • Transmission Analysis and Congestion Management
  • Portfolio Optimisation and Valuation
  • Risk Management and Stochastic Optimisation

With the release of version 6.3 in January 2013, we will also incorporate a new Gas Modelling component, making PLEXOS a fully integrated energy model cooptimising electricity and gas system dispatch.  This new feature will model gas fields, storages, pipelines, nodes, gas demands, among others, integrating long-term expansion planning for gas and electric infrastructure.  Furthermore, it will model constraints on short and mid-term gas supply and its impact on electricity production.

Energy Exemplar supports this endorsement of PLEXOS for use in power system modelling in Australia.  We encourage all market participants in the Australian NEM to download the PLEXOS database for their expansion modelling and other power system analyses.
