Gold Standard Technique Celebrates Golden Anniversary

To celebrate the golden anniversary of automated amino acid analysis, Biochrom is introducing a special edition Gold Standard Biochrom 30 Amino Acid Analyser.

Cambridge, UK, February 27, 2008 — In 1946 amino acid analysis took months to provide results. By 1950 analysis times dropped to weeks. Then in 1958 Stanford Moore and William Stein made a major breakthrough and automated the amino acid analysis technique for the first time to enable the analysis to be completed in a single day.

50 years on, although the underlying principles of amino acid analysis remain the same, analysis times for full profiles now take less than two hours to perform. To analyse certain families of amino acids can take as little as 10 minutes. The accuracy of the gold standard amino acid analysis technique means that it remains the choice of thousands of laboratories worldwide.

Stanford Moore and William Stein were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1972 for their contribution to biochemical analysis.
The eminent scientists devoted a lot of their research careers to developing techniques for the separation of amino acids. In 1958, together with DH Spackman, Moore and Stein published a description of an automated instrument for the separation and quantitative determination of ninhydrin-positive compounds. From that day automated amino acid analysis has become a key biochemical analysis technique used by thousands of scientists worldwide.
