Toronto, ON (POST) July 7, 2011 – OES is under attack for missing recycling targets paid for by consumer eco-fees charged on electronics purchases. A software solution is readily available.
In the first year the Ontario Electronic Stewardship collected only 17,000 tonnes of the target 42,000 tonnes. In the second year the Ontario Electronic Stewardship improved collections to 29,000 tonnes to curtail the threat of hazardous waste.
Consumer eco-fees range from $12.25 for computer monitors to $24.25 for televisions. The Ontario Electronics Stewardship, a private organization funded by electronics manufacturers and retailers, sets the eco-fees charged to consumers. The program has reportedly collected a surplus of $20 million of consumer eco-fees.
Two of the most commonly expressed and easily addressed flaws of the current program are the financial incentives for recyclers and effective downstream tracking. Some recyclers have reportedly opted out of the program in favor of selling materials in the open market for much higher prices than the amount reimbursed by the Stewardship program. Standardized tracking by the recyclers and from one organization to another has also been a major obstacle and raised many questions.
