“My mother was diagnosed with (genetic) Early Onset Alzheimer’s in 2007. With the general thought from her doctors that she most likely had symptoms for the past 20 years…a majority of my young adult life,” said Stepheni Norton, owner of Arts ‘n Drafts. “Muse n’ Brew is a perfect depiction of us, the California crew of the Norton family. We all know life is tough; others might throw the kids away and the towel in. But look around, we are blessed enough to have the sun, the sand and each other. So we found inspiration in the diseases, the deployments, and the kids others called ‘defective’….then hosted a party to celebrate it all.”

About Arts ‘n Drafts
Arts ‘n Drafts, an inspiration lounge ‘n libation studio where artists ‘n their adoring public come for conversation, cult beverages, kinesthetic art, charity ‘n tasty morsels….ultimately to raise funds earmarked for programs that provide a direct and instantaneous impact on the lives of those they serve. Our charities of choice support the lives of patients and their families suffering from Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis; as well as members of the Military and At Risk Youth…It’s funny where we end up in life, fighting for causes…some of which we couldn’t pronounce much less spell as kids.

At the most basic level, Arts ‘n Drafts is a communal studio, meeting, and event space incorporating a lounge, bar and cafe for both artists and creative non artists. We celebrate all forms of art with an ever changing culinary, libation and creativity menu. There is something every day for everyone.

Taking it to the next level, our unique monthly convergent affairs bring all our loves together. Each event presents a different perspective on an artistic or charitable theme interpreted in discussion, signature beverages, an interactive art element, charitable works and chefs confab menu.

About Memories in the Making®
Memories in the Making is a therapeutic art program specifically designed for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter offers more than 20 weekly classes at locations throughout San Diego County. The program is offered in partnership with assisted living communities and other agencies. Memories in the Making began in 1986 when Selly Jenny and Marilyn Oropeza teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County. They sought to create a unique way for people with dementia to record their feelings and to reminisce through art. The program has been available through the Alzheimer’s Association in San Diego since 1998, and today the local program involves more than 400 participants each year.

At each class, teachers trained by the Alzheimer’s Association guide participants through projects using themes, props and conversation. As Selly Jenny states in her book Memories in the Making, “art taps directly into both motor skills and emotions without the need for an ongoing memory, as required by conversation. Art is a method that actively provides a means for expression of emotions and feelings.”

The Memories in the Making program provides opportunities for positive social interaction for the participants: some classes are lively affairs as stories are evoked and shared, other sessions are quieter. The class is a meaningful activity that allows participants to set aside struggles and doubts for an hour while they enjoy tapping into their still vibrant creative talents. In some cases although the participant may not communicate verbally about the painting, family members may recognize a familiar motif or image from their loved one’s life history. Either way, connections can be made with participants’ experiences, and the paintings themselves provide encouraging and comforting evidence of the person within.

The paintings created through the Memories in the Making program also help to raise awareness and funds throughout the year as they are featured in our Art Auction, calendar, on note cards, and in community art exhibits. Paintings produced in the program may be submitted to the Alzheimer’s Association’s jury for consideration for inclusion in these activities. At the same time that artists with dementia paint memories from the past they are taking part in our goal for the future – a world without Alzheimer’s disease.
