Australia’s Big Things Map and Infographic – Tourism Draw Card or Dated Relics?

Australian car rental company East Coast Car Rentals have produced an infographic showing the location of the major ‘big things’ spread across Australia such as the ‘Big Prawn’, ‘Big Banana’ or the ‘Big Lawn Mower’.

For the past 50 years small towns across Australia have attempted to put themselves on the map and draw in tourists with their very own ‘big thing’. There are now around 150 big things but the number is more likely to go down rather than up as small communities struggle to keep up with repair costs due to weathering and stolen parts. As tourists have become more sophisticated it would seem giant fibreglass objects just don’t have the pulling power they once had.

While there glory days may be over these sites have been visited by millions of tourists on road trips over the years and East Coast Car Rentals wanted to celebrate the ‘big things’ of Australia and their place in Australian tourism history.

Some interesting facts about the ‘big things’ include:

Richard Greenwood from East Coast Car Rentals said “tourists from Asia, the US and Europe are often still fascinated and amused by the big things that help break up their road trips across Australia and we believe they should be celebrated for the contribution to Australian tourism over the years gone by’.
