Visit Barcelona’s Picasso Museum, the heart of the inspiration of Picasso’s many legendary works. Barcelona’s Picasso Museum is the premier art museum for art enthusiasts and architecture buffs. The museum boasts one of the most extensive collections of Picasso’s works. Originally opened in the early 1960’s, the museum’s Picasso collections are from his closest friend Jaime Sabartes. Sabartes started the museum with several hundred of Picasso’s works.
Located in the center of Old Barcelona, five palaces make up the museum. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised to find the museum sitting on a quiet street, in the Gothic Quarter. Construction of the facility dates back to the 1300’s, and the medieval structure is appreciated for its incredible architecture. Over 3,800 works, by Picasso, pay homage to his work. An extensive collection takes visitors on an artistic journey, from the origins of his emerging talent, through the artist’s time in Barcelona and later in Paris. Visitors will take note of the museums largest collection of Picasso’s work during the Blue Period. Included in exhibits are childhood sketches from the artists late childhood to early teen years. Exhibits include Málaga, A Coruna, Barcelona, Málaga from 1896 and 1897, Madrid, Horta de Sant Joan, Barcelona: 1899-1900, Paris: 1900-1901, the Blue Period, Barcelona: 1917, 1917-1957, Las Meninas, Picasso Engraver, and Picasso Ceramist. Collections include sketches, prints, and paintings from his Cubist period and periods from the mid 1920’s and the mid 1930’s, when he was influenced by the Surrealists. Most famous of the many collections, in the museum, is the collection entitled Las Meninas from the mid 1950’s. Most helpful to visitors, in this particular area, is a correlating guide which describes the artist’s inspiration for each individual piece. Of the massive collection of individual pieces included in the museum, “The First Communion” and “Science and Charity” are considered two of the museums most famous paintings. Barcelona Picasso Museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Monday. Free guided tours are available of the facility, as well as audio tours.
