Scott Nowlin has been a tow truck driver for twenty five years and has seen a lot on the roads while operating his wrecker.
Washington, DC, September 28, 2009 — The Towing and Recovery Association of America, in conjunction with its ongoing effort to improve the image of towers and the towing industry to the general public, would like to acknowledge the recent efforts of a towing operator in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
On September 17, 2009, Scott Nowlin, happened on an accident scene on Route 128 in Needham, MA. He stopped to investigate and then the horn on the car started to hank. He saw movement in the vehicle and approached to find 16 year old Brittany Biancuzzo trapped in her inverted Honda Accord. The accident had occurred as Biancuzzo attempted to avoid debris in the road, causing her vehicle to flip three times before landing in the middle of the road at approximately 9pm. Nowlin, owner of South Shore Towing and recovery in Randolph, Massachusetts, told Biancuzzo he was going to help her and to look away as he broke out the glass driver’s window with a hammer from his truck. He then cut her seatbelt loose and pulled her from the car.
When police arrived at the scene, Nowlin had already freed the girl and she was being checked out by a doctor who also stopped at the scene. Biancuzzo was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham and treated for cuts and bruises.
When asked about the event, Nowlin humbly responded “I was just doing what I consider to be part of my job. That’s my instinct. I just jump in and get it done. I don’t want to see anyone hurt.”
Jaclyn Biancuzzo considers Nowlin a hero. She said her daughter described him that way after the incident. The Biancuzzo’s have thanked Nowlin by phone and plan to thank him in person this weekend. “Other cars had stopped, but nobody wanted to go into the middle of Route 128. He did,” Jaclyn Biancuzzo said. “It’s a miracle really. He actually put his life on the line.”

In the late 1990s, he said, he helped a state trooper and a passenger who got struck by a drunk driver while on the side of the highway.
