CAN BEER BE GREEN (WHEN IT’S NOT EVEN ST. PATRICK’S DAY)?

C

Now at the risk of offending our black and tan bloodhound mascot Wimsey, green is a pretty important color around here at Baying Hound Aleworks. We like the idea of being socially responsible while we?re having fun and creating our deliciously crafted brews for our customers to enjoy. We only have one planet (or at least until that nifty gizmo on Mars tells us otherwise) and we like to feel that we are doing our part to take care of it.  So how do we make our beer green?

Bottles: We take our bottles back and sterilize and re-use them. If we can?t get the labels off (which sometimes happens) we leave the bottles in a crate outside the brewery and encourage home brewers to save a little money and stop by and help themselves.  Anything left over is picked up for recycling.

Spent Grain:  Our spent grain is also recycled?you can do amazing things with it! For those bakers out there, throw a little spent grain into the dough and it?s party time for the yeast?all kinds of sugars and what not that yeast really love.  Spent grain enhances the flavor of the bread and bulks up the fiber content of the finished product.  And there is no reason our four legged friends have to be left out either?spent grain can be used to whip up mighty tasty dog treats?all perfectly safe as long as there are no hops in the malt.  And it sure beats having dogs recycle the couch cushions!

And dogs aren?t the only critters that like the taste of our spent grain?it turns out that chickens are pretty big on the stuff too. So we also supply chicken farmers with spent grain and I can personally vouch for the fact that the eggs that result are some of the best I?ve ever tasted.  We?ve even had a pig farmer or two stop by which has caused the Baying Hound canines to have quite a few pork chop fantasies. And last, but certainly not least, spent grain makes excellent compost for all you gardeners and horticultural enthusiasts.  Spent grain breaks down very quickly and I have noticed that it almost seems to accelerate the break down of the rest of the materials in the compost pile.

But don?t take my word for it?see what you think. But the best news yet is that we charge absolutely nothing for our bottles or our spent grain. Such a deal?you can help us out and help out the environment at the same time and all for no monetary cost to you.  So give us a call at 301 637-9322 to ask about our grain and our bottles.  And of course we?d be happy to talk to you about beer as well.

Baying Hound Aleworks?beer you can feel good about drinking! We know we do.
