Alton, England, November 27, 2009 — Corporate Event and Hospitality Management Company, Cavendish Sporting & Special Events reflect on the risks of foregoing the Company Christmas Party at a time when employee morale has arguably never been lower.

People start thinking seriously about Christmas by the end of October – both on a personal level and in the office. Having been in the corporate events industry for over 20 years, it is disappointing, but perhaps not surprising, to observe that in many companies, senior management have decided not to give a Christmas party for the staff this year.

The reluctance to commit to the Company Christmas party has had a significant impact on the event industry, with the well-known and long established event company Fortesqueue’s the latest casualty – they went into liquidation towards the end of October.

The attitude is understandable – the thinking is along the lines of ‘we’ve had to make economies and perhaps redundancies – what will people think if we blow money on a party?’ Strong management, however, recognises the demoralising effect of this negative attitude on the remaining staff – staff who, quite possibly, have had to take pay cuts to stay in their jobs, or at least have seen serious belt-tightening taking place all around them.

The question to ask is surely ‘how badly do we want to keep the staff we’ve got?’ Christmas offers a golden opportunity for management to show that the company cares about the people who make the company what it is, and contribute to its success. For some, ‘success’ is for the future, when better times return (as they surely will). For them, ‘survival’ may be closer to the mark, but every person employed in the company should be motivated to work towards that survival and future success.

No-one disputes the need to be prudent when finances are tight. Employees understand that as well as anyone else, but are they telling their families that Christmas is cancelled this year? It is not necessary to throw a swanky party with overt displays of opulence, but staff will greatly appreciate the gesture if some form of Christmas celebration takes place, and it is not too late to get something organised. A good corporate event management company will be able to recommend appropriate solutions, advise on availability, negotiate the best rates, and ensure that the Christmas event meets or exceeds all expectations. Where budgets permit, they will also arrange additional theming and entertainment, and attend to all the little details.

The party will always work better, and guarantee better attendance, if partners are included. This obviously doubles the cost per employee, but generates tremendous goodwill with employees and their families. If the budget simply will not allow this, then the party may need to take a different form in order to be successful.

Some companies are simply too busy in the run-up to the Festive Season to fit in a Christmas party. Rather than heaving a sigh of relief at the money saved, consideration should be given to arranging some other form of corporate entertainment or hospitality for staff. This can be deferred into the New Year, but by letting them know that something is going to be arranged for them at a later stage, the absence of a Christmas event is felt less keenly.

Christmas is the season of Good Cheer. Let’s not forget that!
