Metuchen, NJ – May is Jewish American Heritage Month. Commemorate the resiliency of the Jewish spirit with these acclaimed documentaries out now from Passion River Films.

“The Rape of Europa” tells the story of the Nazis’ attempted destruction of Jewish artwork during World War II. It begins and ends with the story of Gustav Klimit’s famed Gold Portrait, stolen from Viennese Jews in 1938, and now the most expensive painting ever sold. More than sixty years later, this tragic history continues to unravel as families of looted collectors recover these stolen works of art.

“As Seen Through These Eyes” is an inspirational documentary illuminating the story of a heroic group of individuals who fought Hitler through their artwork. Maya Angelou narrates this powerful story of endurance and survival. These artists used whatever materials were at hand to create works documenting the horrors they experienced, often garnering admiration from the German guards as well. This film is a compelling statement about the human spirit and the strength of baring witness.

“Lodz Ghetto” exposes the realities of Jewish life during the Holocaust using the secret diaries of a single community, revealing the struggle of 250,000 people trapped in Nazi Europe’s longest surviving Jewish community. Short-listed for the Academy Award’s Best Documentary Oscar, this International Film Critics Award winner brings us the words and faces of besieged families who love life but can only pray for a miracle to save them. Told with both intimacy and passion, “Lodz Ghetto” is about the human spirit enduring ability to yearn for life, love, and freedom.

“Belzec” chronicles the eponymous Nazi death camp responsible for the death of at least 600,000 Jews. In operation for less than a year, the SS eliminated all traces of the camp when the Soviet counterattacks began and Belzec was forgotten. This final chapter to Shoah is a reminder to the viewer of the necessity of actively preserving history.
