Catholic Church Before the Bench

On Feb. 10, 2010, the Administrative Court of Freiburg will hold a hearing and make a ruling on a volatile charge. The judges should enjoin the Roman-Catholic Church from continuing to call itself “Christian.”

This is demanded by the plaintiffs, a theologian, a physician, two journalists and two jurists, on the grounds that many of the behavior patterns and doctrines of the Church are incompatible with the teachings of Jesus Christ as they are described in the Gospels. The charge was brought against the Archbishopric of Freiburg, namely Dr. Zollitisch, Archbishop of Freiburg and President of the German Bishops’ Conference, as a representative of the Catholic Church in its entirety.

A church in which child abuse is the order of the day and which is then covered up has nothing to do with Jesus Christ. Just as little does its bloody past, reaching into the mass murders of the past century in Yugoslavia. And its threats of damnation, with which it keeps its faithful in line, have nothing to do with Jesus of Nazareth, either. Nor do its rituals of pagan origin. These are only a few examples from an extensive documentation of the unchristian behavior of the Catholic Church, which lies before the court.

The plaintiffs, Free Christians for the Christ of the Sermon on the Mount, do not want to put up any longer with the fraudulent labeling of the Catholic Church and the abuse of the name of Christ.

Whether the Freiburg judges are capable of deciding for the truth and against the Catholic Church remains to be seen. The judges did not want to reveal their religious orientation to the citizens who are seeking justice. The extent to which they are obligated to the creed of the Catholic Church may, however, be quite significant for the outcome of this case.
