Woodhall Spa – The Home of English Golf Benefits From Chemical Mixer

Environmental green systems installed a prototype of a specifically designed chemical mixer for green keepers, which proved to be successful.

Princes Risborough,UK,February,27,2008 — Golf has been played in Woodhall Spa since 1890. Today there are two 18 hole courses – the Bracken and Hotchkin, with the ‘Hotchkin’ being ranked 53rd in the world (Golf Magazine) and best inland in the UK (Golf World). It is also the National Golf Centre, which incorporates a highly acclaimed golf academy, and is the home of the English Golf Union.

Whilst being highly ranked in the world and a focal point of English golf, it is imperative to maintain an exceptional standard of fairways and greens. To achieve this they have adopted the use of foliar feeds which, whilst providing the required results, is labour intensive.

Powdered fertilisers have to be thoroughly diluted in water to the right proportions; if any solids remain in the mix, clogging of the sprayers will occur causing lost time.

EGS installed a prototype of a specifically designed chemical mixer for green keepers, which proved to be successful, but the experience of Sam Rhodes the courses manager led to design suggestions, which were incorporated into the mixer. The full production model has been in heavy use for 5 months now and has brought significant benefits to the club.

Sam Rhodes explains that the course fertiliser treatment is a two man operation, but with the mixer taking only 30 minutes to mix 1200 litres, this reduces labour to one and a half men, and there is no time lost due to sprayer clogging. The mixer is also being used for all other course treatments.

The typical return on investment for the mixer is one year, based on labour costs and reduced chemical costs by using solid form rather than liquid chemicals.

The mixer, which is called “The Big Green Mixing Machine”, has been designed and built as an energy efficient and environmentally friendly product using only industry standard components.

Environmental Green Systems also provide wash down systems for golf clubs and other commercial businesses; these systems remove all contaminants from the run-off water, and recycle the water for use by pressure washers, etc.
