Whaling is a new form of phishing which threatens to cripple financial institutions from the top down by targeting executives and other high-level employees. In this scam, perpetrators collect extensive information on top executives from company websites, social networking sites such as LinkedIn, and other readily available information sources. The emails sent to these executives are carefully written to entice the recipient into clicking on a website that downloads malware onto his/her computer, which then records keystrokes and other activity.
