In fact, according to media reports, this is certainly going to become reality soon. Some people also feel that it could happen as early as the end of this year. A lot of momentum has been building up in recent times, as interest groups have been working overtime with the government. They have been urging Washington to introduce a bill to this effect. It seems that this buildup is finally working. Washington has not just taken note, but has started working on it seriously. The general feeling today is that, online gambling should be allowed, but should also be regulated well.
It needs to be mentioned however, that some people are still against legalizing online gambling. Republican Jon Kyl and Senator Harry Reid are two such people. They remain convinced that this move will be disastrous. They are putting pressure on the Justice Department to stop this Congress move. It however seems that there is a shift here as well. For instance, Kyl has mentioned in 2006 that e-gaming was as bad as taking crack cocaine. His views in April this year was radically different. He now believes that many casino games actually need a lot of skills. One of them is poker. Kyl has mentioned this in his website, and it certainly came as a surprise.
There are many supporters of this move too. Roger Gross, the publisher of Global Gaming Business magazine, is thrilled about the news that Congress is seriously considering legalizing online gambling. He is however concerned about how the regulations are going to be structured. Sheldon Adelson, who is a big donor to the Republican Party and also the CEO of Las Vegas Sands, also feels that this Congressional move is going to bring in positive results. According to reports, the House Speaker, John Boehner, is also supporting this move.
Observers are saying that there are several reasons why the Congress is thinking about allowing online gambling. The issue of revenue is however the main issue here. With the economy not in great shape, most states would welcome any extra funds that they can get. Internet gaming can play a key role here. According to estimates, online gambling can bring in more than forty one billion dollars over a period of ten years. Share of the states will be an additional thirty billion dollars. This is a lot of money that nobody can ignore any more.
There are some people however who do not agree with the Congress seriously considering legalizing online gambling. They feel that the Congress should never pass this bill just for financial gains. Les Bernal of Stop Predatory Gambling agrees that the state will make money. He however, mentions that individuals will lose out here, as many of them would go deeper into debt.
