Dad-time Stories Get Personalised this Father’s Day

In many homes, the bath and bedtime routine is reserved especially for Dad. It’s a chance for them to get stuck into reading with their children –as well as an opportunity for some quality family time.

London, UK, May 25, 2010 — According to research from the National Literary Trust*, the role of the father in a child’s upbringing is surging in importance. With ever increasing numbers of events, websites and forums catering specifically for a more interested generation of dads, they are increasingly being expected to play an active role in the stimulation and development of their children. Literacy plays a huge part in this new Dad-centred world.

love2read was launched by Mum of three Caroline Edwards in 2008 after she identified a need to further engage with her own children when reading with them. By personalising books with family photographs, the love2read range now consists of a fantastic collection of simply themed books including ‘My dad’ and ‘My hero’, as well as ‘I like’, ‘All about me’ and ‘My family’.

With a £5 donation per book going to Help For Heroes**, the love2read collection is a fantastic way for Dads to add a little magic to bedtime stories – as well as help develop literacy skills by introducing familiar images.

“Each unique book aims to develop a child’s love for reading. By presenting stories which reflect the world of family and incorporating simple words, children are able to learn to read much faster,” says Caroline.

Caroline also says that the family bond is increasingly strengthened through reading, and that this interaction in particular can hugely boost the confidence of mums and dads in their parenting skills.

Bedtime stories are a particularly special, uninterrupted time which allows Dad to do something he is naturally the best at – bringing pictures to life and introducing funny voices that children love. For both mum and dad it’s a heart warming and proud moment watching their children interact with the books they know and love. A favourite book is always pulled from the shelf time and time again.

As well as being educational, love2read books act as keepsakes, recording special moments and memories – especially relevant now that we print far fewer of our family snaps these days.

According to Caroline, many customers like to print books for gifts such as Father’s Day, as well as for special occasions. Another favourite is to use the books to record each year of a child’s life.

The report from The National Literary Trust further suggests that the active role of the father within parenting responsibilities hasn’t been inherited from past generations. This is a new development – for the first time Dads are more involved with the upbringing of their children than ever before.

“I love the fact that bedtime is my time. I get home from work and the bath, books, bottle and bed routine belongs to me – it’s my quality time with my son. When he goes and picks his favourite books from the shelf and we sit together to read each night, I have a huge sense of pride – especially as his vocabulary and recognition of images seem to grow every day ’ says one dad.

love2read books have been hailed as a fantastic way to develop reading skills, as well as preparing infants for pre-school. And the personalised element makes these books the perfect gift for Father’s Day.
