Divorce Rates Continue To Rise Above The Number Of New Marriages

Edinburgh, UK 8 February 2008 (Pressabout) – – The number of marriages ending in divorce over the course of 2007 saw a sharp increase above the number of new marriages, according to a study released today by industry resource site DivorceAdvisor.org. According to the figures published by DivorceAdvisor.org, the number of divorce cases heard over the last year was up by 12% on 2006 as more and more couples choose to judicially end their marriage.

Amongst some of the more significant reasons for the rise in divorce cases is a changing attitude in society to marriage and divorce, according to Graeme Churchill, from DivorceAdvisor.org.

“Marriage today is a whole different institution from what was once the case. Fifty years ago divorce would be seen as scandalous – now it’s common for a large percentage of the population to be married several times over through the course of their lifetime. It’s all to do with changing values and changes in the way we live our lives.”

The report, commissioned by DivorceAdvisor.org also reflected that whilst divorces were up, so to the number of weddings and civil ceremonies conducted over the course of the year had also shown a rise of some 5% from the findings of the 2006 study.
