DNA Tests Can Contribute to Employee Success

Depression can have a direct impact on an employee’s productivity. Just ask the over 20 million Americans who suffer with depression each year. A study conducted by morefocus group, inc. in Carlsbad, Calif., offers some insight into depression, and how DNA tests can help minimize the impacts of employee depression on their success.

Carlsbad, CA, June 05, 2009 — Some employees attribute symptoms of depression to work and daily life stressors, and many agree business management should be more proactive in helping employees cope with depression. These are just a sample of the results taken from a survey conducted by morefocus group, inc. in Carlsbad, Calif. The survey was carried out over a four-week period and delivered across a mix of 175 health and lifestyle websites reaching some two million consumers.

Some respondents felt that depression was hereditary (49.5%); however more respondents (71.3%) blamed work, relationships and financial obligations as the main causes of depression. “Depression can affect an individual’s ability to be successful at work, which can, in turn, lead to more depression,” according to Dr. Regan Carey, CIDO for morefocus. “For an individual to be as successful as he can be at work, he needs to know how to treat and manage his depression as quickly and effectively as possible.”

DNA testing can help doctors determine the anti-depressants to which a patient will be most responsive. By identifying the correct medication at the beginning stages of treatment, physicians can decrease the amount of time needed for patients to start experiencing relief. Of those who participated in the survey, 67.9% reported that they had been professionally diagnosed as suffering from depression, and 75.4% agreed that companies should become more involved in helping their employees get treatment for depression.

“Employees who are battling depression would benefit greatly from having access to DNA tests as part of their workplace benefits package,” said Dr. Carey.

Respondents were primarily women (77.0%), within the 26-41 age range (41.4%) and single (44.5%). Along with heritage and daily stressors, respondents agreed that other factors such as major life events (e.g., death, job loss) (66.4%) and physical or psychological conditions (65.0%) were causes for depression.

“DNA testing offers more information about a person than can be gathered through a trip to the doctor’s office. By using the latest technology, physicians can offer the best possible treatment for patients in need,” said Dr. Carey.
