Dump Bins Manufacturer Turns To 3D Solid Modelling

The introduction of 3D solid modelling at Luminati represents a significant advancement in the design and manufacture of dump bins and other acrylic products.

Ivybridge, Devon, UK, December 06, 2008 — Luminati had been using the IntelliCAD design system for some years to create the 2D cutting files for the CNC routers. With the need for better drawing information, Luminati invested in its first seat of AutoCAD LT. This has helped Luminati, who specialises in the manufacture of dump bins for publishers and retail outlets revolutionise the concept to manufacture process.

Steve Senior, MD of Luminati says: “New conceptual design for dump bins was the next area to be addressed. We needed to be able to quickly present ideas back to clients from written design briefs. Until this time, information was either paper sketches, isometric drawings or basic 2D drawings.”

Luminati then decided to trial RhinoCAD as it was known to have a very powerful rendering engine as well as all the usual drafting tools. Following an extensive trial using the fully functional demo version it was decided to purchase the full version along with Flamingo, the material library and renderer.

Within months, 3D modelling had become an integral part of the dump bin design process. Very often a basic solid model will be prepared even at the quotation stage, to explore methods of construction, visual impact, materials, colours etc.

Steve Senior explains: “Most customers are not engineers so we have to present ideas and images of dump bins in a way that non technical people can visualise what we are proposing. If the client requires it, we can now produce photo realistic images of their product, even displayed in their specific environment.
