The Epistle of Nicodemus is probably the most remarkable religious publication of recent years.
vybridge, Devon, UK, August 01, 2009 — Writing from Pella in AD75, having survived the destruction of Jerusalem five years earlier, Nicodemus had been a Ruler of the Jews and a member of the Sanhedrin that had condemned Jesus of Nazareth to death. He himself, however, had been a loyal disciple of Jesus from their first meeting as recorded in St. Gospel Of John, over two years later even assisting Joseph of Arimathea in the removal of the body of Jesus from the cross and its burial in the tomb.
His Epistle is of extraordinary importance as Nicodemus in his old age knew more about Jesus, his family, his Apostles and his disciples than anyone else at a time when the earliest written accounts of Jesus were being collected, and when most other eye-witnesses were no longer alive. Written to all churches throughout the Roman world, his great universal letter had been provoked by two false accounts newly in circulation relating to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. These were not only gaining credibility, but causing Christians to question the loyalty of Nicodemus to Jesus at the time of his trial 46 years earlier as recorded in the 7th chapter of St. Johns’s Gospel.
The Epistle of Nicodemus is written in defence of what he knew to be the truth, challenging each new assertion and in the process revealing details that have been matters of controversy for centuries. Here we learn what really happened with respect to the birth and bloodline of Jesus, the inter-relationships between his nearer and wider family and even the fate of Joseph the father of Jesus.
The Epistle is accompanied by a series of Editor’s appendices which the reader will find helpful, including a genealogy of the kinsfolk of Jesus based on the information provided by the text of Nicodemus and the New Testament.
