Fancy owning Australia’s House of the Year?

If you have ever dreamed about owning the ultimate keeping up with the Jones home, you can’t get much better than the 2007-2008 Australian House of the Year, for sale for the first time through Christies…

Mandalay Coral Gardens, in north Queensland, was voted Australia’s House of the Year by the Australian Master Builders Association, and is now on sale with Christies Great Estates.

Designed by Architect Peter Connelly, Mandalay Coral Gardens was constructed in 2005 by owner Bill Sharpe, whose firm was the continent’s 2007–2008 “builder of the year” in Australia.

Set on a private peninsula with stunning views over the Great Barrier Reef and Pioneer Bay, the home, inspired by Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, offers more than 13,000 square feet of modernist living.

With New Zealand stone, automatic sliding glass walls, Italian marble and endless terraces, the house is designed to make the absolute most of its stunning setting and panoramas over the surrounding Whitsunday ‘bounty bar’ islands.

The infinity pool wraps around three sides of the house and creates a feeling of being connected directly to the Coral Sea beyond. If that weren’t enough, there’s even a swim-up wet bar, 24-berth private marina and private helipad to welcome those high flying guests.

Agent Ken Jacobs, from Christie’s Estates, says the private marina is a unique feature. “It’s a very special aspect of the property,” he says.

“The whole home is just spectacular, the best that I’ve seen in the region,” he added.

Developer and builder Bill Sharpe and his wife Kirsty, who currently live in the house, have no illusions about how long it might take to sell their award-winning home.

After living in the house for four years, the couple is looking to downsize. “We want to free ourselves up a bit more,” Mr Sharpe said.

“But I know it could take a while to sell – it could take up to a year.”

After 15 years in the Whitsundays, the Sharpes are looking forward to a lifestyle change that will allow them to split their time between Airlie Beach and ports further south.

The home’s informal living areas extend down to a private sandy beach and Tepanyaki pavilion, fully equipped with kitchen, powder room and dining area, making it ideal for alfresco entertaining.

A timber boardwalk surrounds the property along the water’s edge, connecting to the 270 square metre Caretaker’s residence, gym and office. There is also parking for five cars.

You wont; be short on space inside either- as well as open plan living and eating areas, there are four huge bedrooms, master suite with dressing rooms, cinema and balcony terrace.

So, the $64,000 dollar question we’ve all been waiting for… what’s it worth? Well, a good deal more than $64,000, that’s for sure. The property is going through an expressions of interest campaign so there’s no exact price tag but interested parties will have to stump up at least £7 million to secure this slice of luxury.
