Faster 3G Adoption and Declining Prices to Drive Handset Sales in India

F

Availability of 3G-enabled handsets is a critical factor for the successful deployment of 3G services in India. Pricing of handsets will also contribute significantly in adoption of 3G services by masses, reflecting the importance of operators’ strategies. Currently, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as Nokia, Samsung, HTC and iPhone provides 3G-enabled handsets in the Indian market. Moreover, it is projected that all handsets above US$ 200 would be 3G-enabled by 2010 and all handsets above US$ 100 would be 3G-enabled by 2012. As a result, the 3G-enabled handset sales in the country is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 55% between 2010 and 2013, says our new report “Indian 3G Mobile Forecast to 2012”.

Our team of experts has further studied the Indian 3G market by segmenting it on the basis of mobile subscribers, Internet subscribers, broadband subscribers, 3G mobile subscribers, 3G broadband subscribers, 3G-enabled handset sales, 3G modem sales, technology, and urban/rural divide. On the technological front, our research projects that the WCDMA technology will constitute around 92% of the total 3G mobile subscriber base by the end of 2013. Various factors that will enable the WCDMA technology to dominate the 3G mobile subscriber base have been studied in our report.

Our report also highlights the fact that there remains a vast gap in the teledensity levels of the urban and rural areas, and the deployment of the 3G services on a national scale will play a vital role in bridging this huge gap. The future success of 3G technology in the country depends upon its ability to exploit the rural market because around 70% of Indian population lives in these (rural) areas. As per our study, rural India will constitute around 10% of India’s total 3G mobile subscriber base by the end of 2013.

Besides this, our research report provides thorough analysis on the key telecom companies in the country, namely, BSNL, MTNL, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Reliance Communication Ltd and Vodafone Essar Ltd, especially highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.
