Fredericksburg Habitat For Humanity Accepts Buffett Challenge for Gala 2012!

Fredericksburg, Virginia ? Mention the name Habitat for Humanity and you may be hard pressed to find anyone unfamiliar with the incredible work and generosity of this thirty-six year old organization.  Most will be quick to associate names like former President Jimmy Carter, rocker Jon Bon Jovi, crooner Harry Connick, Jr., or jazz musician Bradford Marsalis, all major spokespersons for the prolific organization.  But, fewer are familiar with our hometown heroes who, together for more than 17 years, continue to make affordable housing possible throughout our community.  This year the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity (GFHFH) has plans to change that with its crowning effort to highlight this spectacular year, its contributors, volunteers, and community leaders who like Habitat have helped others build dreams.  Having garnered the assistance of philanthropist Doris Buffett, whom Habitat will honor at its first annual year end gala, the organization will showcase its relentless work of building affordable housing in the city of Fredericksburg and the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, and King George.  Doris Buffett is the sister of multi-billionaire Warren Buffett, and because of her generosity has been called ?one of the greatest and most generous philanthropists of our age?.  Her Sunshine Lady Foundation has offered a challenge grant of $25,000 to GFHFH, if the organization raises $50,000 at the gala. The grant will be used for the first Women Build for GFHFH.Habitat?s theme for this year?s gala and fundraiser is ?Women Who Build: Hope, Community and Homes?, and will also honor Susan Spears, President of the Regional Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce; and Mitzi Hamilton, Owner of Handy Girl Home Improvements, LLC.  Fredericksburg?s Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw will be the event?s keynote speaker.   The December 6th gala and fundraiser will be held at the Fredericksburg Expo Center in Central Park, with live entertainment provided by the Fredericksburg Big Band.  The gala has long been the dream of GFHFH?s co-founder and board member Carl Wiberg.  He along with a small group of other concerned citizens chartered the local association to provide adequate low cost housing in the area.  But that founding board had their hands so full meeting the housing needs of others that planning a party, even one to raise funds, required more time, energy and money than they had available.  Now with a few extra hands on board and compassionate benefactors, that dream is becoming a reality.  As housing needs in the area continue to rise, GFHFH can use more hands and generous givers.  There are opportunities to help in many ways.  Volunteers are needed not only to construct homes, but in a number of administrative, retail, and technical positions.  Contact GFHFH to find out how you can help.  Individuals and organizations may purchase tickets and sponsorship packages now for the December 6th Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity?s 1st Annual Fundraising Gala; ?Women Who Build: Hope, Community and Homes?, at the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity office located at 4755 Jefferson Davis Highway, in the Four Mile Fork Business Center.  For more information and for group sales call 540-891-5009 or visit the Fredericksburg Habitat?s website at http://www.fredhab.org .  ###Please insert your content here *
