Gates Energy Solution drives onto the world stage
Gates energy-saving technology powers automobiles at Olympics
and Democratic National Convention

Denver, CO – As green initiatives become a central theme at highly anticipated events across the world this August, the Electro-Mechanical Driveâ„¢ (EMD) System, an energy-saving solution produced by Gates Corporation, is the driving technology that powers vehicles being featured at events from the Unites States to China.

Gates Electro-Mechanical Driveâ„¢ (EMD) System is a start-stop technology for hybrid cars that reduces both fuel consumption and emissions. It is currently available in vehicles sold in North America, Europe and Asia on the 2008 Hybrid Saturn Vue Green Line, Saturn Aura, 2008 Chevy Malibu, Chery BSG A5, Chery ISG A5 and PSA Peugeot Citroen. Independent studies have shown fuel savings of 6 – 10 percent, depending on the application, and more than 20 percent savings in urban traffic.

“Having our technology in these hybrid vehicles is an example of how Gates Energy Solutions technologies are driving to make our customers more successful and visible on the world stage,” said John Bohenick, President of Gates Corporation. “It also supports Gates Enterprise Objectives of Energy, Environment, Cost Reduction, Performance and People.”

EMD in Beijing
The Opening Ceremony for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing featured the debut of China’s first hybrid vehicles in a 50-car motorcade. This fleet includes 40 BSG A5 hybrids and 10 ISG A5 hybrids, both produced by Chery Automobile Company and powered by the Gates EMD system.

Being touted as the “Olympics Green Messengers,” the motorcade was selected by the Chinese Olympic Committee to emphasize the two Olympic themes of Science and Green. In comparison to the standard Chery A5, the BSG A5 improves fuel economy by 10-15 percent and the ISG A5 improves fuel economy by 25-30 percent. Both hybrids reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 12 percent.

“This is exciting news for our valued partner Chery, and for the Gates global engineering teams in North America, Europe and Asia that developed the EMD system,” said Bohenick.

EMD at the Democratic National Convention
Gates Corporation will showcase the EMD system at its headquarters in Denver, Colorado during the Democratic National Convention from August 25-28. A Saturn Vue and Saturn Aura will be on display outside the Gates Corporate Headquarters building to provide observers a firsthand view of the fuel-saving system solution.

“Gates is showcasing the technology to further educate elected officials, media and the general public on how Gates is driving the development of important energy-saving technologies,” said Bohenick. “These display vehicles allow Convention visitors and guests the opportunity to take a closer look at one of our very successful energy solutions and learn how the technology benefits the environment while ultimately providing a fuel-saving solution for consumers.”
