“Soldiers Who Salsa” – A Brief History

The project began as “Lessons at Lunchtime”, where one of Mary Murphy’s (Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance”) former dance students, Mike Podlenski works with amputee patients in physical therapy at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego (NMCSD). He trained his staff to dance and eventually the patient class grew too big for the therapy room. As he looked for a bigger space, he also looked for a teacher to pick up the classes on a regular basis.

With approval from the commander on base, Mike and Mary agreed to a six week trial session. Patients would come during the lunch hour and the physical therapists would participate with the patients as dance partners. With Mary’s busy schedule, the program was on hold until she could find an instructor who would commit to weekly sessions and also have the right temperament and attitude to take on this unique challenge.

In January, Mary hired a new instructor who fit the bill, Jennifer Ables. Jennifer had just recently moved to San Diego from the Washington DC area where she had been teaching ballroom for the Arthur Murray Dance Center for the last 12 years. Being new to San Diego, Jennifer had the time to dedicate to the program as well as strong personal interest, having had her share of physical injuries and knowing what dance had done for her own recovery.

The first class in the initial course began on April 5, 2010. The physical therapists soon saw that many of their patients could benefit from the physical and mental aspects that come from learning to dance, and asked TBI (traumatic brain injury) and PTSD patients to attend. Each week, the program now has a mix of therapists and patients from all areas and military branches. The goal is to continue to grow and develop the program in a way that can be utilized at any military medical facility. We are working to develop an adaptive syllabus of dance steps, as well as recruit other teachers and volunteers.
