Following a recent report by market research company Mintel, Alihoco created a poll to its 8,000 Facebook fans to see if its own followers were complete converts to online bookings or whether they still use high street travel agents when booking a holiday.
According to Mintel 70% of people who booked a holiday last year did so entirely online with 14% happy to book online with a company they had never heard of. However, Alihocoâ??s survey discovered much more favourable results for the traditional high street travel agents.
Alihocoâ??s results found two things;
- That 73% of people still book their holiday on the high street compared with just 27% of people choosing to do so entirely online.
- Although 50% of people use high street travel agents in order to pick-up a brochure before finding the best deal online, a further 50% of people search for a holiday online before booking in their local travel agent.
It is clear that online travel agents remain a major threat to the high street stores, however, Alihocoâ??s survey would indicate that although many people are now booking online, the same number are also using the internet as a research tool before booking with their local agent.
