Montreal, Quebec, May 10th, 2011– Hilbroy Advisory Inc. (DeutcheBörse: 2H0) Hilbroy Advisory Reports:
The Rivers State Council of Trade Union Congress has called on the federal government to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on crude petroleum through diversification of her economy.

It urged the government to embrace growth of agricultural, manufacturing, industrial and other labour intensive sectors to boost employment.

Speaking to newsmen in Lagos on the need for government to grow the national economy for job creation drive in 2011, the Rivers State council chairman of TUC, Hyginus Onuegbu called on federal government to, apart from investing on oil and gas, diversify the economy to other sectors to boost employment opportunities.

“We call on the federal government to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on crude petroleum through diversification of her economy away from crude oil/gas and the growth of agricultural, manufacturing, industrial and other labour intensive sectors.

“We all know that the oil and gas sector is an enclave sector; it is very capital intensive, and its contribution to overall employment is minimal. We should also be courageous enough to review our system of fiscal federalism such that state and local governments would be motivated to grow their economies in their areas of comparative advantages”.

Arguing that economic growth without development does not trickle down to the majority of the people and does not provide jobs for our teeming youths, Onuegbu insisted that to boost employment “Government at all levels should expedite actions in resuscitating ailing/comatose government owned industries and companies through Public/Private Partnership in such a way that these companies/industries can sustain ably create jobs and guarantee reasonable returns on their investments”.

“We also appeal to federal and state governments to urgently review the curriculum of our various educational institutions taking into consideration the current and future economic and social needs of the country and trends in the global marketplace, and with strong emphasis on entrepreneurial and technical education to generate more job opportunities”

He however said “The dangerous level of poverty, unemployment and deprivation in Nigeria, especially considering their grave implications for the security and unity of our country, is unacceptable and calls for very serious and urgent actions by the federal and state governments”.
