Today, more independent and success-minded individuals are choosing to take a hiatus from their careers and “normal” everyday lives. They take long-term travel or participate in volunteer projects with the aim of meeting personal goals and enhancing their careers. Employers are offering both paid and unpaid sabbaticals because they appreciate employees with initiative, real-life experience and skills they wouldn’t obtain from their usual jobs. The mid-life gap year is a long-standing tradition many Europeans but Americans and Canadians are catching on.

Many former breakers feel they didn’t get as much as they’d hoped for from their experience and feel a better structure or motivation/inspiration before and during their career break would’ve helped.

Founder Lou Kawakami is a passionate coach and experienced life breaker who knows the rewards and the potential pitfalls in a career break. With more than one break behind her, she is a keen traveller with experience of the travel industry and voluntary work – with decades of experience to enhance her coaching and consulting. Lou has gone from business suit to wetsuit – as a professional stuck behind a computer screen in busy London, England to getting lost in the jungles of Papua New Guinea to swimming with sharks as a scuba diving instructor in Thailand and back to her original home in Canada. She knows it’s a simple formula combining the right mindset with good information that’ll make the life break a great success.

Lou says: “So many successful people know they want to break free, do something rewarding and experience something different. But they don’t know where to start or they’re facing resistance from themselves or from others.”
