INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN LASER POINTERS USED FOR STAR GAZING

What is Laser Star Gazing

Laser stargazing is the practice of using a laser pointer pen to point out and help identify stars and constellations. While there are a myriad of color options available such as blue, red and violet laser pointer, green is the best option for stargazing. Green is the most recognizable color to the human eye and does not negatively affect night vision. Lasers help pinpoint stars and makes it easier for individuals and groups to star gaze.

The Necessary Technology

Depending on where you live, you will have access to different size lasers by law. Overall however, there is no need for a laser over 5mW for most normal conditions. If you are lecturing to a large group or are in difficult conditions, a more powerful 10 to 25mW laser could be a better choice. There is no need however to employ a 50mW plus laser for simple stargazing. As well, price is not necessarily an indicator of how appropriate or useful the pointer will be for star gazing, a cheap laser pointer could do the job, it just depends on the laser pointer.

Safety First

There are some recommended guidelines when using a laser in stargazing. Lasers should not be pointed directly at stars because of the common occurrence of mistaking a place for a star. Pointing a laser at a plane is dangerous and can distract pilots. The best method is to make circular motion around the star or constellation being focused on. As well, only locate the stars with the laser pointer; do not keep pointing at the subject while observing.  It is important to keep in mind that the laser beam does not end, even though you may not be able to see it.
