Drive Lansing, MI, December 22, 2009 — International House Portrait Artist Leisa Collins today released the first in a series of tutorial articles on “How to Paint a House Portrait”. Entitled “Lesson One: Getting Started – The Planning Stage” the first article covers the beginning steps one must take in order to create a successful house portrait.

“Fail to plan and you plan to fail, as the old saying goes, is totally applicable to art,” said Leisa. “Sure there is always that element of spontaneous creation but my best paintings have been ones that I planned out well beforehand. A lot of other artists who make their living at their craft will agree with me.”

The article covers basics such as making sure your house portrait subject is suitable, while not losing sight of the fact that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and if doing a house portrait for a friend or relative, thought must go into what makes the house special to them. “For example, that ramshackle farmhouse that your mother was brought up in might not look like much but to her it is imbued in nostalgia and happy family memories. These things should be part of the portrait therefore,” said Leisa.

Also contained in this first tutorial is how to decide on the best angle for your portrait, ensuring the garden surroundings are included and taking the right photos.

The next article, Lesson Two, will be how to choose the best medium for your house portrait.
