Jersey Shore University Medical Center to Host a Free Skin Cancer Screening Clinic

J

Neptune, NJ – Jersey Shore University Medical Center will host a free skin cancer screening on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. The screening will be held from 5-7 pm in the Oncology Services Unit located in the Ambulatory Care Lobby of the Amdur Pavilion at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The skin cancer screening will be free and open to the public, but spaces are limited. People can either choose to receive a full-body or spot-check for skin cancer. If a suspicious mark or mole is found, information will be provided on how to contact the Meridian physician referral line for appropriate follow-up.

Kathy Colopoulos, a clinical nurse specialist at Jersey Shore, along with the Division of Cancer Services have gathered a group of local dermatologists to perform the screenings. “Overall we want this event to raise awareness on the dangers of skin cancer,” says Colopoulos. “We want to provide people with a reliable screening and valuable information so that skin cancer can be prevented through early detection.” The free skin cancer screening will be conducted using the American Academy of Dermatology guidelines.

The incidence of skin cancer continues to grow both in the United States and throughout the world. If diagnosed early patients are likely to make a healthy recovery and will have to follow strict guidelines concerning sun or UV exposure. If not treated early on, certain types of skin cancer may become malignant melanoma, which is the leading form of all skin cancer-related deaths. Dermatologists and people alike should look for any discolored, misshapen or growing marks on the skin that could be potentially cancerous.

For more information and to register for the event call the Meridian Health Event Registration Line, 1-800-560-9990.
