JOI-Design Publishes 101 Hotel Rooms

JOI-Design, one of Europe”s leading hospitality interior design practices, has just published its second book: 101 Hotel Rooms. Following the success of their first book, RAUM.WERTE: CREATING HOSPITALITY DESIGN, this second publication takes an in-depth look at a multitude of guestroom and suite design styles and layouts conceived by coauthors Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk and Peter Joehnk, as well as by the JOI-Design team, during the firm”s nearly 30-year history.

(London, 3 December 2010) hen envisioning a future guestroom, JOI-Design”s guiding principle is that “form follows not only function, but also emotion”. Designers must not only reflect the hotel”s milieu, culture and practical requirements in a bedroom scheme, they must also anticipate guests” desires and reactions to the space. It is human nature to want a place where one can feel safe and settle-in quickly; therefore every idea that can ease this process is worthy of consideration. Imaginative approaches to providing this “hospitable” environment are found throughout the book in guestrooms that have either been designed to the conceptual stage or realised.

While many of the fundamental elements required within a hotel room are consistent from project-toproject, finding inventive ways to apply them is where JOI-Design excels. Whether creating a scheme for an independently operated boutique hotel, implementing formalised brand standards or designing a five-star luxury destination, the practice responds to the unique demands of each project brief. Having worked on a wide range of resort, city, luxury, and budget hotels in locations all around the world, the designers have considered the challenges posed by each category and crafted solutions for nearly every genre in the industry.

Descriptions of each project”s scope explain the various factors that influenced the scheme and the challenges faced by the interior designer to balance these for a successful result. Space plans, perspective drawings and images of “mood boards” draw readers further “inside” the creative process of hotel design and help form a concise, easily grasped guide to the inspiration and intended emotional impact for each of the guestroom concepts.

One example of a project currently under renovation is the boutique hotel “Le Clervaux” in Clerf, Luxembourg. Readers can learn about the property”s provenance as a villa situated next to the town”s castle as well as the design brief to create 35 suites. Then, by studying the renderings and room layout, they can discover how the history and requirements have been thoughtfully interpreted to bring about the desired mood. And for projects which have been completed, such as Le MĂ©riden Grand Hotel in Nuremberg, Germany, a photo of the finished guestroom provides the truest evidence of how the vision from a designer”s mind comes to life.
