Latest Figures See Recovery in Door Drop Industry

L

The Direct Marketing Association has released its latest annual figures for the door drop (unaddressed mail) industry. The results are based on an annual survey by the DMA’s Door Drop Council and show a modest but significant increase in 2010.

Expenditure increased by 3.1% to £260 million in 2010 while volume rose by 1.8% to 7.9 billion items. These values represent the distribution element of advertising campaigns and not, for example, the value of print or production.

This recent growth follows a degree of contraction in the industry over recent years. The average number of door drops delivered each week to the average British household has actually fallen from 9.1 items in 2005 to 5.8 items in 2010.

Commenting on the survey, Adam Perkins, owner of the leading Dorset based distributor Tudor Distribution, noted:

“Numerous factors have affected industry volumes in the past few years. Clearly the economy has had an impact, but equally we have seen both a significant reduction in the circulation of free newspapers and also a more intelligent use of leaflet distribution in highly targeted campaigns. As we see some recovery in advertising spend generally, so many users are realising that a traditional leaflet drop continues to have many advantages over the increasingly congested online space.

We have certainly noticed a resurgence in the leaflet distribution side of our business, not just in Bournemouth and Poole but across all of Dorset, in Salisbury and Southampton.  Customers have to find you on the web. With leaflet distribution, your message is literally under your customers’ noses.”
