On Monday evening November 26 at 5PM, Plymouth, Minnesota Mayor Kelli Slavik will join resident Mike Justak to “flip the switch” on over 40,000 lights that form a light show display in  his front yard. The lights “shimmer” and dance in sync to music he broadcasts on his low power FM station 97.9. Justak calls his light display PD Shimmers. “Shimmer, is kind of like tremor, the most common symptom of Parkinson’s Disease(PD). It’s a tongue in cheek reference.”, Justak noted. He went on, “PD Shimmers offers a shimmering message of hope and inspiration to the Parkinson’s community. I try to demonstrate one can overcome the obstacles of this disease. When the lights shimmer think for a moment of the 20,000 Minnesotans and one million Americans who have Parkinson’s. And every ten minutes the count grows by 1.
Justak, a Parkinson’s patient diagnosed at the age of 47, decided he wasn’t going to sit back and wait for the progressive movement disorder to take control of his body. He instead formed a non-profit today known as The Mike Justak Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease(MJFPD). The foundation’s mission is to raise awareness, promote movement therapies, educate, and help fund a cure. “We try to improve the lives of those who suffer with this disease on a daily basis.” This year the show will be the backdrop for his “Lights of Hope” campaign. Funds raised online and onsite via a donation box will be used to promote various physical exercise therapies for patients as well as be applied to research into a cure.
