Medical Tourists: Three Siblings Shoot By 300 Pound Weight Loss Goal After Lap Band Surgery Facilitated By WorldMed Assist

New Year’s resolutions come in many sizes and shapes. With the help of medical tourism company WorldMed Assist, three siblings changed their shape by 300 pounds since their 2008 resolution to shed pounds as a team, with lap band surgery performed in Mexico.

Concord, CA, December 31, 2008 — Audria Harrington and her brothers Jeff and Rodrick Hogg made a resolution in 2008 to shed their unwanted weight as a team. With assistance from medical tourism facilitator WorldMed Assist, they became the first trio of siblings to undergo lap lap band surgery in Mexico at Hospital Angeles.

“We each had our lap band surgery the last day of February 2008, and reached our combined goal of 300 pounds in eight months,” said Harrington. “We’ve now lost 325 pounds: I lost 85, Jeff lost 110, and Rodrick lost 130. We’re each going for another 40 to 50 pounds to get to our ideal weight.”

All three had tried traditional weight loss methods over many years, but none could keep their weight under control for long. When they first made their pact to lose 300 collective pounds, they didn’t know their solution would put them into the fast-growing niche of medical tourists. They also didn’t know their new friends at medical tourism company Worldmed Assist would become such an important part of their weight loss solution.

Their decision to have lap band surgery, which was performed by Dr. Lopez Corvala at Hospital Angeles in the upscale Zona Rio of Tijuana, Mexico, came after extensive research of several weight loss options. Then Jeff Hogg found WorldMed Assist on the internet, and found they were knowledgeable, friendly and could arrange the surgery quickly, with a highly qualified surgeon who specializes in lap bands. The low cost of lap band surgery in Mexico sealed the deal.

“With my 85 pounds gone, I’m now more active with my children, and I can get out of bed in the morning without my feet hurting. I also needed a lot more sleep before, and now, I get my eight hours and feel great all day.” Harrington said. She and her husband recently opened a clothing store, and she can now try on clothes she couldn’t dream of wearing a year ago. “I can even wear belts and tuck my blouses in,” she added with pride. I used to buy tons of sunglasses, which my husband found curious. I told him glasses are about the only thing I could buy where size didn’t matter.”

Her brothers are enjoying equal benefits of their slimmed down selves. Rodrick’s wife is thrilled because he now no longer snores.

After three months, Harrington hit a plateau. She stopped feeling full after her meals, though she was able to maintain the 50 pounds she’d already lost. Part of the reason she’d chosen the lap band procedure was because she knew the solution to the expected plateaus was easy: “I went to a lap band fill center in Tucson, and they filled the band so I’d feel full faster. The weight started coming off again immediately.”

Lap band surgery has many advantages over other weight loss surgeries because it is less drastic, adjustable and reversible, and recovery is quick. The procedure relies on an adjustable band placed around the upper part of the stomach that is later filled with saline to reduce the stomach capacity and restrict the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. The diameter of the band can be modified with a fast and simple fill as patients lose weight or if circumstances change. For example, pregnant women can expand their band to accommodate a growing fetus.

In September, Harrington hit another plateau, and this time, so too did her brothers. All three had their bands filled, and are now back on track to reach their individual goal weights.

“What this is all about is having a tool to help us change our eating habits for the rest of our lives.”
