Concord, CA, December 31, 2008 — Audria Harrington and her brothers Jeff and Rodrick Hogg made a resolution in 2008 to shed their unwanted weight as a team. After three months, Harrington hit a plateau. She stopped feeling full after her meals, though she was able to maintain the 50 pounds she’d already lost. Part of the reason she’d chosen the lap band procedure was because she knew the solution to the expected plateaus was easy: “I went to a lap band fill center in Tucson, and they filled the band so I’d feel full faster. The weight started coming off again immediately.â€
Lap band surgery has many advantages over other weight loss surgeries because it is less drastic, adjustable and reversible, and recovery is quick. The procedure relies on an adjustable band placed around the upper part of the stomach that is later filled with saline to reduce the stomach capacity and restrict the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. The diameter of the band can be modified with a fast and simple fill as patients lose weight or if circumstances change. For example, pregnant women can expand their band to accommodate a growing fetus.
In September, Harrington hit another plateau, and this time, so too did her brothers. All three had their bands filled, and are now back on track to reach their individual goal weights.
