Recognizes his artistic leadership at Boston Ballet, establishment of important educational programs. Mikko Nissinen Accepts Boston’s Guide for the Arts Ambassador to the Arts Award for 2009-2010 Season
Boston, MA July 15, 2009 — Mikko Nissinen, Artistic Director of Boston Ballet, has been awarded the ninth annual Ambassador to the Arts award from Guide for the Arts. The award recognizes Nissinen’s artistic success in transforming Boston Ballet into one of the premier companies in the world, touring the company internationally to Spain and Korea, as well as his leadership in expanding the company’s educational programs, which reach extensively into the Boston community. “Boston Ballet reaches not only young dancers, but makes groundbreaking efforts in dance therapy, audience outreach and community relations,” says Guide for the Arts publisher Kevin T. Wood. “The Guide is delighted to recognize his work, and looks forward to supporting these programs.” Boston Ballet’s community programs include Citydance, an inner-city scholarship program; Adaptive Dance, a joint venture with the physical therapy department at Children’s Hospital; Dancetalks, a presentation series for audiences; and Taking Healthy Steps, intensive summer performing arts workshops.
The Ambassador Award is sponsored by Guide for the Arts, a groundbreaking publication for patrons, benefactors, artists and administrators. Guide for the Arts established the Ambassador Award program in 2001 in Boston, and has since honored such luminaries as composer John Williams, Sen. Edward Kennedy, and Institute of Contemporary Art’s director Jill Medvedow. The Guide recently announced that Placido Domingo, General Director of the Washington National Opera, has received its 2009-10 Washington Ambassador Award. “I’m delighted to join such distinguished company with this honor from Guide for the Arts,” said Nissinen. “I thank the Guide for its support of Boston Ballet’s work onstage, in the studios and in the community, and look forward to continuing this work in the city of Boston and beyond.”
The Ambassador Award, a unique sculpture created by Bennett Awards, will be presented during the Boston Ballet’s 2009–10 season, which opens on Sept. 19 at its new home in the Opera House with “Night of Stars.” In-kind support from the Guide for Boston Ballet’s educational programs will also be announced at that time.
