NATO Cautions Subscribers of e-Bookshop of Possible Data Breach

N

Recently, a website associated with NATO suffered security breach. Cyber security experts are investigating the incident. The website, e-Bookshop does not contain any classified information and is operated as a separate site by an external agency for dissemination of information associated with NATO for public use. However, NATO has not ruled out possibility of data breach and has temporarily disabled access to the site. NATO has notified the subscribers of potential data breach. Anonymous had earlier allegedly issued a warning to attack websites associated with NATO in response to the latter’s reference to the former as a major sophisticated and high profile group involved in politically motivated attacks. The latest attack on the 28-nation military alliance comes in the backdrop of several high profile cyber-attacks on government and corporate bodies. According to a report on Forbes, names and login credentials of around 12,000 registered users of the website are possibly part of the files dumped by the Lulz Sec on Pirate bay.

The group reportedly declared an end to its 50 day wave of cyber-attacks with loads of disclosures including those related to AT&T, AOL, Disney, Sony, Viacom, an online game site and Irish investigative agency. Lulz Sec was behind several high profile cyber-attacks over the last couple of months resulting in exposure of loads of privileged customer and business information. Recently, the cyber-attack group announced a campaign called ‘Anti Sec’ in collaboration with Anonymous to reveal information related to government, and banking companies. The attack group followed up the threat with disclosure of confidential documents related to Arizona Department of Public Safety. Meanwhile, NATO also announced the implementation of a new cyber defense action plan, agreed earlier this month by the defense ministers of the NATO member countries.

Security breach incidents expose the lapses in security practices of the affected organizations. As such, organizations must test strength of the IT infrastructure, identify and resolve security flaws prior to their exploitation by cyber-attackers. IT professionals holding masters of security science and security certifications help in devising and implementing appropriate security policies.

Cyber security training, online degree and e-learning programs may help in improving information security practices among employees. The recent wave of attacks has again brought to light the severe business, reputational and financial implications of security breach incidents. The attacks have re-emphasized the need for proactive approach, rather than a reactive approach to fortify the IT infrastructure. IT security and online university degree programs may help IT professionals in meeting their training requirements in the ever changing IT security landscape.
