Help When Nurse Needed It

H

You can’t do it alone, that’s what Patricia Holloran, RN, learned when she was confronted with her addiction to Stadol, an addiction that cost her a nursing job. Besides help from a great psychiatrist, a savvy lawyer and supportive friends, Connecticut nurse Holloran was supported in her recovery by Nurses for Nurses, a peer support group for chemically dependent nurses.

Read about Holloran’s experiences in Impaired: A Nurse’s Story of Addiction and Recovery ; then join in the discussion on this ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses offering Jan. 6 at ADVANCE for Book Club, scroll down to Calling All Book Worms. Also, hear Holloran tell her story or ask her a question by joining the author and ADVANCE for Nurses editor Stacey Miller in a free live Webinar Jan. 11 from 6-7 p.m. ET. Beginning March 3, ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses will read We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese by Elizabeth Norman.

About the ADVANCE for Nurses Online Book Club for Nurses
The ADVANCE for Nurses online book club discusses six books annually, covering a different book every 2 months. After reading Impaired and We Band of Angels, join us May 5 as we read Josie’s Story: A Mother’s Inspiring Crusade to Make Medical Care Safe by Sorrel King. July 7, we look at Alzheimer’s and its effects on the person and his family when we read Still Alice by Lisa Genova. Marking the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in September, the book club reads Nursing in the Storm: Voices from Hurricane Katrina, co-authored by Denise Danna, DNS, RN.

Similar to a traditional face-to-face book group, ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses members read the book and join the online conversation, complemented by a podcasted interview or video with the author or a related expert.

About ADVANCE for Nurses
ADVANCE for Nurses addresses the needs and interests of RNs across the country with nine regional print newsmagazines reaching more than 800,000 nurses, 16 regional Web sites, live and virtual events, and social networks.
