PGCC Alumni Defends Inland Empire Title

P

Rizal Amin has been playing golf since he was 8 years old, and has always had an incredible love for the sport. When he was 18, while still in high school, Rizal’s dad discovered PGCC and encouraged him to attend. Taking his father’s encouragement to heart, Rizal enrolled at the college, and began taking his golf game to a new level. Although Rizal had been competing on the Amateur Tour from the age of 12, PGCC is where he developed his game and took it to a more advanced and competitive level of play.

After graduating PGCC in 2002, Rizal decided to continue his collegiate education at the University of La Verne in California. While attending school to earn a Bachelor of Science in Movement of Sports Medicine, Rizal also played for the university’s highly respected golf team. Rizal traveled several months out of the year playing tournaments all over the country, consistently placing in the top five. During his junior year, Rizal earned the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year honor for his incredible sportsmanship coupled with his consistent top ranking scores. Rizal finished off his senior year by placing 3rd at the NCAA Division III championships, which helped the University of La Verne golf team place 2nd in the entire nation, overall.

As Rizal reflects back on his experience at PGCC, he asserts that his time at the school helped prepare him, both mentally and physically, as a competitor. He asserts that he would not have competed at the level he was able to for University of La Verne golf team without PGCC’s training, and acknowledges that PGCC has been a great stepping stone for his life as a professional in more ways than one. Rizal recounts that, “When I was at PGCC I was surrounded by people that played professional golf, so they knew the ins and outs of playing tours”, which he credits as a huge advantage to his mental game when competing. When Rizal graduated PGCC he had a handicap of 4, and has been able to bring that down to a 2.7 currently. Rizal recently fought to defend his title in the Inland Empire Amateur Tournament on September 5th-7th, which marked his last start as an Amateur.

Rizal is looking forward to the next phase of his golf career. He is set to begin attending Qualifying School throughout December, with the intent on moving toward professional competition on the PGA tour in the United States or possibly on the Asian tour. We look forward to watching Rizal in the years to come, and are wholly confident that his game and humble attitude will earn him a spot on the PGA tour.
