Portsmouth Employment Law Clinic now able to give free advice year round

Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK ? 21th August 2012: Hampshire-based law firm Verisona are to assist Portsmouth University with their Employment Law Clinic.

The clinic is run by students studying at the University of  Portsmouth School of Law under the supervision of tutors, all of whom are trained lawyers.  The service opened in 2010, offering free legal advice to local residents and students relating to employment law, including unfair dismissal, discrimination, redundancy, harassment, the national minimum wage and more.

However, being a service run by students it has meant closing the clinic between study terms, including the duration of the summer holidays and also when students are busy studying and taking their examinations.  Portsmouth law firm, Verisona has stepped in to run the clinic during the periods when the students are unable to do so at no cost, meaning access to free employment law advice throughout the year for Portsmouth residents.

Verisona Employment Lawyer, John Taylor said: ?It?s a great opportunity to assist the local community as well as further our links with the University of Portsmouth.

?Demand for employment law advice can be high outside of term time as students look for temporary work and businesses take on extra staff to deal with busy periods.  It is important to have employment law advice available all year.?

Verisona have been working alongside the UoP School of Law for the past year, offering work experience opportunities and mentoring  local law students.  Verisona trainee solicitor and UoP graduate, Natalie Foster has also been involved in running the clinic alongside the students.

Anne Stoneham, the clinic?s supervising solicitor from the School of Law, said: ?The employment law clinic aims to support the legal needs of the community, while also providing a ?real-life? experience for the law students.

?We are delighted to be working in partnership with Verisona to enable the clinic to run all year.  This is an excellent way to ensure it maintains momentum and helps support people across the city even when the students aren?t here.?
